8.22.06   Summer Smash - Detroit

ok, so admitedly, this is not a WLT event, in fact we had nothing at all to do with it in the least … but thats not important is it?

and lets not even mention the fact that we should have told you abt it sooner, ok? ok.

the facts are as follows:

so check out the info at their website, and then venture on down to either the Lagerhouse or Detroit Contemporary for the smashing-est summer event ever. oh, and this is the last SS, so you wouldnt want to have to tell yr grandchildren you skipped it to watch another Simpson’s re-run, would you?

The 8th annual (and most likely FINAL!) Detroit Summer Smash Festival is set for August 24th, 25th & 26th! This Summer Smash proves that the Detroit area will continue to be a place for artists and musicians to thrive for years to come.

This year, money raised will benefit the CAID’s nonprofit mission. The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit is a community based non-profit organization. CAID fosters and promotes the essential link between contemporary arts and contemporary society through its exhibitions, performances, critical and public discourse, and the funding of contemporary arts and art related activities. For our last festival, we aim to give back to the Detroit arts and music scenes that have given so much to us since Summer Smash began in 1999. We’ll see you August 24th at the Lager House!!! And August 25th and 26th at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit!!!

5.30.06   Detroit Urban Craft Fair
Event Info:
Saturday, August 5
11:00 am - 2:00 pm

the following info is from the DUCF website :

The Detroit Urban Craft Fair is a one-day alternative craft fair hosted by Handmade Detroit. Over 50 vendors from Detroit and the Midwest will set up shop from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the Majestic Theater in Detroit. The event is free and open to the public.

What does “alternative craft fair” mean?

Simply put, we aren’t a typical arts and craft fair. We believe in the spirit of urban DIY. You may have seen our followers on the pages of ReadyMade, participating in Chicago’s Renegade Festival, or over at Craftster.org. Our goal is to feature these underground artists and give them a space to show off. You won’t see country crafts, painted saws or jams n’ jellies at our fair. You will, however, see rockstar nightlights, recycled t-shirt tote bags and vegan lip gloss.

Come on, what type of stuff will be there?

Clothing, accessories, bath and body products, stationery, ‘zines, toys, baby stuff, art, household accessories, jewelry and more!

Who is running this thing?

Handmade Detroit is an open collective of indie crafters. Handmade Detroit grew from a desire to gather the many creative handmade artists in Detroit and its surrounding communities. With a group of artisans, crafters and people who just like to “do”, we exist to create a network of local resources and opportunities and raise awareness about the unique qualities handmade goods have to offer. As a collective, Handmade Detroit offers connective information, workshops and DUCF, which all reinforce the growing demand for DIY goods and creative thinking in Detroit. More info and ways to join us is at www.myspace.com/handmadedetroit.

What inspired you to start this fair?

Oh, we are so glad you asked this. Having run Handmade Detroit, we saw the lack of opportunities for alternative crafters in the Midwest and wanted to start something to help us all along. We are all makers ourselves and interested in pushing our community to grow and connect. What better way than to start a large-scale craft fair?

I’d like to be involved, is there anything I can do to help?

Double Yes! We always need more people to pass out flyers, hang posters, post MySpace bulletins and do some good ole’ word of mouth advertising. If you’d like to help get the word out about DUCF, shoot an e-mail with the subject line PROMOTION HELP to promo@detroiturbancraftfair.com.

We’re also looking for volunteers to work the day of the fair as event staff. Event staffers will be used as runners and loaders for our vendors and with decoration and general set up. Because these people are such a big help on the day of the fair, they will receive special thank yous much like our vendors. If you’re interested, please send an e-mail with the subject line EVENT STAFF to info@detroiturbancraftfair.com.
