software
most of these are free/open-source software that we like to use...
if you're looking for something fun to play with, this is the list for you...

:: audio ::

Super Collider - A real time audio synthesis programming language. If SC were a woman, Chris would have a lot of explaining to do.

Cycling 74 - Home of Max/MSP, real-time audio development environment (not free)

CREATE - Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology, creators of really cool software like PulsarGenerator and Cloud Generator

Kinky Beep - Sound synthesizer for Mac OS9, Igor and Chris swear by it. The author made plenty more software, but we like this one the best.

SoundHack - Spectral audio processing for Mac.

thOnk - "An extremely simple to use Freeware Macintosh application, that uses Granular Synthesis to produce very diverse sounds based upon a sound file provided by the user, where you have NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER over the process."

Pure Data - A real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing.

Sound Converter - Converts almost any kind of audio format to another one. $10 Shareware and definitely worth it, if you need it. MacOSX

Audio Hijack - Killer software that records any audio playing on your computer. $16 and so worth it...

:: visual ::

Processing - A programming language and environment built for the electronic arts and visual design communities. This is where we stole the graphic on our main page, but it does so much cooler stuff than that. Processing is currently in Beta development stage, but it still works beautifully and is really fun to play with. Seriously, take a look.

:: utilities ::
these are programs we have come across in our quest to create this community, and there's a good chance some of you could use them in your own web efforts, so in the spirit of WLT, we thought we'd pass along some help

WordPress - the blogging software we use for the 'news' and 'events' pages. Open-source, totally wonderful to use.

Jext - Java based text editor we are using to edit this very page. Mac & Windows!

SimpleFTP - Windows based FTP utility for all your webdesign work when you're at work and can't get to your Mac.

Fetch - Mac based FTP utility for all your webdesign work when you leave early to work on your site at home. Mac OS9 & X.

Mozilla - Yeah, we know, it doesn't seem right that we would give props to a company that makes a web browser and email program, but seriously, these two programs are the shiz. They are both open-source and free and hell yes, they wreck IE and the rest... Trust us, go get Thunderbird and Firefox and get ready to laugh away your troubles, you'll see...and you'll never doubt us again.
